This issue can cause you headaches but on the bright side, its a problem that won’t require to spend any more on service. In short, you can solve this problem all on your own and with just a few simple tools. And yes, even if you have a Kohler toilet, this problem is bound to happen. Here’s a guide on how to fix a Kohler toilet that keeps running.
1. Take note of the Kohler toilet model number. This may or may not be needed but it’s good to keep a record of it. In fact, you should do this with every fixture you buy for your home as it makes it easier should there be any problem that arises in the future. Now, you can always repair your Kohler toilet without knowing its model number but then again, having it at hand makes other things so much easier. For example, should you need to replace a part, it helps to know the model number of your toilet.
Finding the model number is different depending on what model you have. For instance, if you have a model from the post-1990 line, you’ll find the model number on the tank just above the water level. The model number might be hard to find in older models but you can try looking in different places and you’ll surely find it.
2. Turn off water supply to the toilet. This is important so that you don’t have water spraying all over.
3. Remove the cover of the toilet tank.
4. Remove the float valve cap. You do this by turning it clockwise. The valve cap may come in any color but no matter what the shade is, there should be a black seal inside of it.
5. Rinse the seal then check again if there is damage before covering it.
6. Turn the water back on and let it flow for 30 seconds before reassembling the toilet.
Replacing the Float Valve Seal
In case the instructions above didn’t solve the issue, maybe you need to replace the float valve seal. Sometimes, rinsing the seal just isn’t enough to solve the issue because the object might have rips or tears that is not visible to you. If you want, you can have the entire float valve replaced as well.
Don’t worry, the float valve isn’t that expensive and it’s a component that needs to be changed every ten years. In short, having it changed now means you won’t have to think about it for several years.
Replacing a float valve is not that hard as the old one should easily slide out. The hardest part, however, is removing all the water from the tank. To make sure all the water is removed, do this:
- Shut off water supply to the tank.
- Flush the toilet to get rid of the water.
- Use a sponge to take care of the remaining water.
