A toilet that is constantly getting clogged can be frustrating and embarrassing, but many people simply plunge and move on without fixing the root cause of your problem. Here is a list of potential toilet issues that you should look out for.

It’s Not You, It’s Your Toilet: Why Your Toilet May Be The Cause of Your Constant Clogs

#1: Bad Flushing Habits

One of the most common issues we see with the toilets we work on are clogs caused by improper flushing habits. The only things that a toilet is designed to handle are waste and toilet paper. Everything else belongs in the garbage can.

That includes so-called “flushable” wipes, which can cause significant issues for your plumbing and further down the sewage system because they do not disintegrate in water as toilet paper does. Due to this, they cause costly clogs that can damage your plumbing.

#2: Tank Problems

The flushing mechanisms of your toilet are all inside the tank. Unfortunately, it’s pretty easy for your flapper chain to get caught on something or for something to fall out of place. This can result in a flush that is too weak to do its job. Don’t be afraid to open up the tank lid and take a look for yourself. There might be an obvious solution like a flapper chain replacement!

#3: System Issues

If these don’t explain your problem, there might be a greater issue with your plumbing. Typically, this would be a blockage further along the system. Inside your toilet is an s-shaped trap that can collect the odd things you have flushed down your toilet over the years and create clogs.

#4: Sewer Line Issues

If there is a leak or blockage in your sewer line, you may have a severe problem. The EPA requires that a leaking sewer line be replaced so that it does not leak wastewater into the soil.

#5: Vent Problems

Many people do not realize that your plumbing system requires air vents to function properly. This issue can cause poor flushing. You can recognize a vent problem if you hear strange gurgling noises coming from your toilet.
