For homes on city water, that entry point typically sits just after the water meter. For homes on well water, the water softener usually goes near the pressure tank that manages the flow of water from the well into the home.
Installing a water softener downstream (closer to a single fixture rather than the main entry point) only softens the water running to that one spot. Everything else in the home still gets hard water.
